The Foundational Stage educators recently completed a 10-hour pedagogical workshop spanning three Saturdays. The sessions offered a dedicated space to reconnect with core educational philosophies, validate current practices, and acquire new practical techniques to complement our curriculum.

Historical Foundations were discussed to understand the background of this approach. To throw light on a few takeaways-

Friedrich Froebel’s introduction to the concept of kindergarten as a ‘child’s garden’ and play-based learning using tactile wooden ‘gifts’ to explore patterns. Jean-Jacques Rousseau emphasized that instruction must align with a child’s natural cognitive readiness. Child-Centered Pioneers were also discussed during these sessions. Namely- Dr. Maria Montessori designed structured, self-correcting environments that foster independence and critical thinking. Gijubhai Badheka adapted Montessori’s principles for Indian classrooms by crafting affordable, locally made tools to replace rigid teaching methods.

Thus, the Waldorf Approach (Rudolf Steiner) focuses on holistic development—head, heart, and hands—through practical classroom integration:

Rhythm over Routine: Balances high-energy and quiet tasks like a natural breathing cycle.

Natural Elements: Uses simple, organic materials to encourage sensory discovery.

Music & Movement: Uses rhythmic songs for smooth transitions without rigid discipline.

Wet-on-Wet Painting: Enables free colour exploration on wet paper without strict outlines.

Conclusion

The workshop concluded on a warm, harmonious note, leaving our team with a refreshed toolkit to create more engaging, nature-aligned, and joyful classrooms.
