Marks and More Marks

Tanvi Devpura, Class XI E

‘How much did you score in your last test?’ This is probably the most common and horrifying question asked to all school going students these days. Wherever they go, and whoever they talk to, everyone wants to know just one thing……. the number of marks obtained!
Students are constantly told that these ‘numbers’ are what define them and that they have to work day and night to ‘earn’ these numbers. If not, they will not get admission into a good college and their future will be bleak. They do not get any time to read just for pleasure or pursue any other hobby. ‘Sit and study’ has become the daily mantra of the parents.
It is probably the fault of the current education system that marks have become the only measure of success in life. Colleges take admission only on the basis of marks scored in a particular examination. The only anxiety students have these days is about marks, and more marks in the examinations.
This trend needs to stop and parents need to be made aware that not only marks, but sports, art, music, etc. are equally important in a student’s life.
It is ironic as I sit and write this article, that I wait for more “numbers” to define my life.
