I had always dreamed of visiting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. I’d heard so much about the gentle breezes, the calming waters, the breathtaking landscapes, and the vibrant marine life. Finally, I made it there with my family. As soon as we reached Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), I felt a sense of euphoria and we began exploring.
Soon, we reached the port to board a ship to the Neil Islands. Surprisingly, it started raining cats and dogs. Since we didn’t have any umbrellas, we realized that we were completely unprepared for the downpour. That’s when my sister had a genius idea. To save us from catching a cold, she handed out plastic bags. We boarded the ship with plastic bags tied over our heads like shower caps. It looked awkward, but it worked! As we settled into the lower deck, the ship tossed and turned on the high tides, and we enjoyed every second of it.
Upon reaching Neil Island, there were no taxis available. We managed to find a thela (cart) rickshaw for our luggage, and I managed to squeeze into a corner of the cart, sitting among the suitcases. It wasn’t the “luxury” arrival I had imagined, but it felt like a real adventure.
Eventually, we found a taxi and checked into a beautiful resort at Lakshmanpur Beach. It was incredibly blustery, which made the surroundings feel so peaceful. I sat on the balcony to listen to the birds chirping and felt a sense of victory that we had finally made it.
In the evening, we went to Bharatpur Beach. It was drizzling when we arrived, so we did some shopping and bought pearls and souvenirs. Finally, the instructor gave us the green light for the glass-bottom boat ride and snorkeling. I will always remember the moment I was floating in my tube; with the drizzle hitting my back and I dipped underwater into another world. Everything was so silent and still. I saw mushroom corals, brain corals, and schools of vibrant fish. I felt like I was part of the ocean, while my sister watched the same magic from the glass-bottom boat.
The trip was a complete roller coaster. These memories are everlasting and I will cherish them forever. Neil Island taught me that even when it rains, mother nature shines, and you might have to wear a plastic bag on your head to enjoy.
