Growing Older

Author: Anora Ankur Kulin, Class XII D

Growing Older
What does it feel like, growing older?
Does it need you to be bolder?
Or does it need you to be softer and nicer?
Is it the sound of your bones creaking
As you shuffle across the floor?
Or maybe the clitter-clatter
Of the fixing of dentures on your gums bare?
For me growing old was a fun process
Meeting my grandchildren
Baking, cooking and the like
Snuggling up in a blanket with a mug of hot cocoa
And telling long, intriguing stories to all the tiny tots
Surely, with all those diseases coming to get you
And living the sunny old life,
My yellow days were definitely a glorious charm
How mellow were your golden years?
Oh do tell!
I’m all ears. Or rather,
“all hearing aids.”

Missing a Memory
Those beaming, wrinkled faces,
Those comforting wise hands,
When I look at your faces,
I see wisdom, I see the light of knowledge
I see the years of experience, I see comfort
I see a little place I can crawl into
During dreary times
Alas! These happy moments stay only but memories,
Memories lost in the sands of time.
While every reminiscence does joy bring,
Sadness has always and still does ring
I count the days till we meet again
When I can crawl into the safe haven again
I wait patiently for a time that may never come,
People’s words do always discourage,
But your image is enough to encourage
Follow your dreams you said,
Work to what you want most you said,
And that’s the principle I followed,
Until one day life subsided,
And cancer came in, uninvited
I fought for life, like you taught me to
But I lost, and death presided
And now, I travel here patiently and expectantly
To come meet you in the time that I borrowed……
So, I wait for you here again,
For you to take my hand once more
And lead me down this new path
We are united once again, the wait once endless, is now over.
