One Day

Twisha Patel, Class IX F

Neither father, nor mother was there to console us. I was worried and a number of thoughts and questions were piling up into a huge heap in my mind. The past was like a scorching beam searing me.
I remember the date well. It was March 29, 2012. It was late in the evening. I had called my friend Eureka several times on her phone to wish her on her birthday. When I failed to get any response from her, I sent her a text message hoping she’d reply. But she didn’t. I went to sleep thinking that she might be with her family members.
A nagging thought didn’t let me sleep. Eureka never acted like this. She should have seen my message by now. She could at least have sent a reply to me. I finally decided to go to her apartment. When I reached there, I went upstairs and rang the bell.
When even after a while there was no response, I concluded that she wasn’t at home. I left feeling dejected.
As I was walking back home, I saw Eureka outside a hospital. I rushed to her. When she saw me, she burst into tears. I consoled her and asked her what she was doing at the hospital. She spoke with difficulty. I stood there transfixed as if the world around me had come crashing down.
Our brothers had been on their way to plan a small get-together for Eureka and they had met with an accident. Our parents were in the ICU. We, being too young, were not allowed inside. I prayed to god that may all this be just a dream and that I may wake up to realize that none of this had actually happened.

Well, that’s exactly what happened. My phone buzzed and I woke up with a start. I was dreaming! It was Eureka’s call.
