Continuous Professional Enhancement of Educators

May 29 2023

Professional enhancement of  Educators plays a crucial role in the academic excellence that Shishukunj is known for. In line with this practice, workshops were conducted  for educators of the Department of English and Mathematics on June 6, 2023.

English

Theme : Bringing English Alive in the Classroom, Eliminating Common Errors in the Language

Resource Person : Mrs Ira Sehgal,

In the aforementioned workshop Ms. Sehgal  used interactive activities that would help the educators to enhance the learners’ vocabulary, grammar, and creative writing skills. The educators shared their experiences and Ms Sehgal showed how they can be more effective in their classes using various techniques. She also illustrated subtle techniques to eliminate common errors in speaking.

An impromptu TED talk and a game of scrabble were also conducted to show the educators how interesting each session can become if we use innovation and ingenuity to make every student participate actively in the class.

Mathematics

Topic – Bringing experiential Learning to the classroom

Resource person – Ms Bindu Sahdev

The workshop started with a warm up activity which was extremely engaging and fun and full of learning as well.

Thereafter  all the teachers were divided into small groups . The resource person Ms Sahdev then presented and explained the concept of  experiential learning  through slides. Each slide was associated with an activity which involved different areas of experiential learning viz.

  • Arousing curiosity in learners through asking interesting questions
  • Asking visually appealing open-ended questions which create an environment of debate and discussion
  • Visual mathematical modeling presentations
  • Brainstorming and making interesting puzzles
  •  To encourage critical thinking , Ms. Sahdev gave  all the groups the  same material and  asked them  to make a business product using  their own imagination and pitch for it by convincing the audience about its merits by mathematically justifying the idea.
  • Problem solving situations: All the groups were presented with a common problem and they were asked to brainstorm and come up with practical solutions for the same.

Ms Sahdev  also introduced the  Singapore model of teaching – learning known as CPA,  i.e. concrete, pictorial, abstract. According to this model, the educator first presents the concrete form of the concept to be taught and then  makes the concept in question visually appealing . Thereafter  ,  the learners are left to  brainstorm about it and come up with their   own conclusions. Finally the educator presents and explains the actual abstract learning of the concept.

Both the workshops were  successful in igniting  the  educators’ enthusiasm for the upcoming academic season.
