The Visit

Author: Anora Ankur Kulin, Class XII D

“Hello Ms. Eger,” she said,
Walking through the front door,
Hands full with groceries and milk.
“I won’t be needing those” I said,
Not looking up from my writing.
“Not this week, Edith”
“Why, Ms. Eger, is this about
The test reports in the mail?”
“No darling, I don’t need a test
To know my future and fate.”
“My dearest friend will come
To meet me soon, she will bring me
Everything I need, thank you.”
She looked doubtful, hesitant even.
“But Ms. Eger……” she began
“Are you feeling quite alright?”
“I believe you forgot your medicines this morning.”
“Now what medicines, dear?”
I asked, tired. I had too many
Already, hard to remember.
“Why, the ones for your Alzheimer’s.”
“Maybe that’s why you forgot
About Mrs. Johnson as well.
I’ll fetch them from the drawers.”
“Remind me who that is again?”
I said, the name sounded familiar
Yet however hard I tried,
I just couldn’t remember her.
“She was your friend, the one from
Minnesota last year” she said, still
Searching through the drawers.
“Ah yes!” I remember the face,
A little hazy but the memory lingers.
“But she wasn’t the one I was meeting.”
“Who then?” she asked taking out pills.
“I can’t seem to remember” I said taking
The little pellets from her hand.
“No worries, you rest your mind
Ms. Eger, I’ll check your reports.”
I smiled, she was always so sweet and patient
I would be sad to leave her.
But my friend is here and I must say goodbye……..
