“There will be time,” they say;
“Do what you want, be not afraid,
You can work some other day.”
Should I believe what they said?
“There will be time” I did believe;
Naïveté and complacency took hold of me.
I drifted from what I’d hoped to achieve,
Yet there remained certain uncertainty:
“Are they wrong?” I didn’t want to believe,
Still the thought lingered in me.
“There will never be time enough,
Soon you’ll be old.”
This is true, I realised as such,
But it was easy doing what I was told.
Yet I wasted my time — much too much;
I waited for answers, still growing old.
“I haven’t even enjoyed my life;
This is the age for it too.”
No! No! No! End this strife!
Is this how I want to live life through?
In this limbo of purpose and drive,
I’m blue, I’m blue, I’m blue!
“The people who say —
What did they achieve?
Is that what you want for yourself too? Mediocrity!
if you so please…”
But I didn’t so please, you see.
I wanted, I needed, to succeed.
“Now the time is past,
What’s done is done.”
A spell to halt time, I cast;
But magic isn’t real — it stops no one.
I must be fast,
For time can’t be undone.
The visage on my wall,
Warns me, calls me.
His hands speak in a drawl:
“Go on, get up, don’t you dare flee.
Don’t escape, don’t crawl —
Run, and seize your destiny.”
