Home

Carla Kohler, Exchange Student from Germany

I would like to talk about something which I only thought of after coming to India. Home.
While in Germany, I dreamt of India. Now, when I’m here, I have never felt so strongly connected to Germany. Strange, isn’t it?
So what is home? A place of origin? A time, like childhood? Friends, family… a language? Or a beautiful protected dream? A wishful picture?
When I arrived here, the smell of home mingled very slowly, from a total stranger to complete acceptance.
Two months later, I think I have found an answer for myself. Home cannot be nailed to people, places, languages or ideologies. It nestles invisibly in our minds. Like a fairy tale, a good idea, or an early memory. And this memory keeps glowing when we step out of our cocoon.
Geographical and temporal.

Our home walks with us.

A Day Before Examination

Khushi Khanna, Class VII B

Examinations are an integral part of a student’s life. They are intended to test their knowledge and skills. Examinations are helpful in providing a stimulus to work. Systematic and consistent study is essential to tackle examinations.
The day before an examination is very important in the life of a student. It is this day, when the assimilation of knowledge takes place in our mind. It is very important to relax and have proper nutrition and sleep on the eve of an examination.
This enhances our concentration level. It is often seen that students become quite nervous before the exams. They cease to follow their regular routine and just think about the uncertainty of the questions or the result. This is not good. Instead, one should ensure comfortable and cool environment and should avoid panic before the exams. And during the day, only the important value points should be revised.

What A Teacher Can Do

Riddhi Singhania, Class XI D
STUDENT:
I once had a dream
A dream, to reach there,
Touch the stars of the sky,
But couldn’t do it
No matter how hard did I try.
I needed a ladder,
To take me up there;
Someone who could
Equip me with skills
And the one who would care
There it was, a gentle touch
And without it,
It might have been tougher;
That voice kept guiding me,
Without showing the pains it had to suffer.
Here I am,
From among the stars,
Looking at you
And do you ask how I did it,
I say, it’s only because of what a teacher can do!

Interesting Mars, or is it….?

Rusham Singh Bais, Class X A

John rushed into the room announcing, “I am going to mars!” breaking the eerie silence that had prevailed in the room. His parents and elder brother were having an important discussion and had abruptly stopped when John had impertinently interrupted their conversation.
His brother sniggered at him asking, “And how exactly are you going there, by train?” John scowled at him, he always made fun of his dreams and thoughts. John said with a ring of hostility in his voice that Ganesha was going to take him.
“Baby, are you feeling sick? Do you have fever?” his mother asked, her voice filled with trepidation and concern. John snapped ‘No’ at his mother and exited the room as quickly as he had entered.
I was waiting for him there with tranquility. Oh! I apologize, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Ganesha, a very good friend of John. John and I had met at Ganesh Chaturthi, he had looked forlorn then. I could not bear the sad look that he bore in his eyes and thus became his companion. We’ve been together since then.
As soon as John entered the room, he hurled himself at me saying that he hated his family. I disapproved his saying such things about his family but decided to keep my mouth shut. After he had drained himself of all his bitter thoughts, I asked him cautiously if he still wanted to go to Mars, and he eagerly said ‘Yes!’
With the magical powers vested in me, John and I reached Mars in a nanosecond. With dust all around, Mars was nothing but a small hot planet with no water. However, John loved the rocks present there, admiring the beautiful texture, the red merging with the sapphire created ravishing shades.
Mustering courage to walk on such a hot planet, we walked around and talked. We could have done that in the garden on earth, but it is so much cooler to talk on Mars! Thankfully, John had packed some sandwiches, and with our mouths full of the yummy bites, we returned to beloved Earth.
We plan to go to Jupiter next. With our fingers crossed, we hope that it will be more interesting than Mars.

Adorable Arts

Soumya Tiwari, Class X B

Arts, many colours they bind,
And are found in numerous kinds.
On a glistening paper,
A paint brush made its way…
Spreading bright colours,
Across the sad, dull grey.
Tracing creativity on a paper,
The colours slowly merged,
The hand made artistic swirls and whirls,
And a splendid painting emerged!
Art is not what you see,
It’s what you make others see,
So paint all your thoughts on a sheet,
And see what a great artist you’ll be!

Rains…

Vasudha Gupta, Class XI D

Rain drains in the streets,
Already surging in water,
Coming down in sleets,
Hitting every traveller.
Drops drum furiously on rooftops
As to make their presence known,
Puddles gather on sidewalks
Where infection will be grown.
Keeping everybody inside,
Flooding basements and drives,
But try, look the other way,
And step out in the tide.
Let drops trickle down your spine,
Making every cell alive,
Let wind whip your hair from your face,
And oh! See what peace you’ll embrace.

Rain, Rain, Come Again…

Rohan Tripathi, Class XI

Rain, Rain Come Again!
We are waiting for you!
Come and drench the mother earth which is so thirsty!
Clean the streets and roads which are so dirty.
Rain Rain Come Again!
We are waiting for you!
I love the drizzle when the sky sheds the droplets.
It wets the town gradually with great zest.
Rain Rain Come Again!
We are waiting for you!
My gardens need you, my flowers need you.
We want to welcome you, we want to greet you.
Rain Rain Come Again!
We are waiting for you!
I love the music created by you when you fall,
Dip-Dip-Dip is the sound that pleases us all!
Rain Rain Come Again!
We are waiting for you!

What Chemistry Taught Me

Manvi Upadhyay, Class X B

In chemistry we learn about the three states of matter-the solids, the liquids and the gases. It was just 4 hours ago when I realised what it actually teaches us.
We all have mass and we all occupy space. This means, we matter. We sometimes are rigid, sometimes we are not. Just like the liquids we take whatever ‘shape’ we are asked to by the society. We are all attracted towards each other. This force of attraction is what you and I have termed as ‘love’. We all are the fluids, filling up and taking up the shapes and sizes the people want us to. We are all spaced from one another. We are all falling apart from each other.
The three states of matter define life. The solid state being the state in which you are ‘held’ together. The state in which you and your ideas are fixed. There is hardly anyone to bother you or to change you. Then comes the society in the form of ‘heat’. They ask us to bring about some changes in ourselves, and without even thinking once we just do it. Sometimes, this whole society effect is so strong that from the ‘rigid’ person you used to be, you become completely helpless and just go around not knowing where you are going, just like the gases.
What I’m trying to say is, be the solid. Don’t change because someone asked you to. Don’t let society’s force drift you apart from yourself. All these people out there will change with time. Just because your outer body is not as pretty as your friend’s doesn’t mean you need to change yourself. Just because one woman is prettier than you doesn’t mean you are not. We don’t count the outer beauty. We are pretty on the inside. We can’t fall apart again and again. Together we matter. Together we are one.
