The Scary Surprise

It was almost midnight and the city was in a deep slumber. Walking across the road was a man in wearing a black coat. It seemed he was trying not to be caught. He carried a briefcase in his hand and was scurrying hurriedly along the road.

Andrew had just stepped out of his restaurant and as he was walking out, he too saw the man rushing along the road. The man who seemed oddly familiar was rushing in the direction of the graveyard. Andrew felt it was someone he knew but just couldn’t put his finger on what it was. He thought of following the man but the idea of stalking a man wearing black to the graveyard in the middle of the night gave him the shivers. He gave up on the idea and headed straight towards home.

As he walked merrily on the street, he came across a pool of red liquid. The first guess was that it was blood. Startled with what he had seen, he backed away from the liquid. As he stepped away, a hand caught hold of him and pulled him back. He struggled to free himself but the grip was very firm. A blindfold over placed over his eyes and he was forced to walk down the road with the person behind him directing him.

Finally, they reached the destination where the person removed the blindfold. ‘Surprise!’ everyone yelled, with his wife standing in the center.

It was their anniversary and his wife had organised a party to celebrate. The man in the black coat was his best friend and the red liquid turned out to be fruit punch. He laughed at his cowardice and danced the night away. What a strange way to throw the best party ever!

When I Was a Child

When I was a child, to me,
It was a boon.
There was no school
And I slept till the noon.
Anytime it would be
April, May or June.
I would just watch cartoon.
There was no homework to do.
Just sit down in the afternoon.
My mother would feed me,
With a big spoon.
All I had to do was learn A, B, C
And then I was free!
No problem or worries I could see.
We friends played together,
I had no studies no pressure
And thought I would last forever.

The Parts of Speech

Grammar is really tough for sure
There are very few, a handful, that adore
This world of words, spellings and letters
That has brought a frown to many faces, baffled several others.
Allow me to take you into this plethora of syntax and phonology
That albeit not cherished by everyone, has proved to be a necessity
So let us, being rather acquiescent, delve into grammar and learn the parts of speech
Which reading, writing, speaking teach.
Three little words that we often see
Are articles a, an, and the.
A noun’s the name of anything,
Be it house or garden, hoop or swing.
To supersede the nouns, the pronouns stand—
Her head, your face, his arm, my hand.
Adjectives describe and tell us the kind of a noun,
As in great, small, pretty, white or brown
Verbs state something to be done—
To read, count, sing, laugh or run.
How these actions are done the adverbs tell,
As slowly, quickly, ill or well
Conjunctions join the words together,
As men and women, wind or weather.
The preposition stands before
A noun, as in or through a door.
The interjection shows surprise,
As in Oh! How pretty, ah! How wise!
These in all form the eight parts of speech, I must say
Who all have various tasks assigned, many qualities to portray.

Happy Teachers’ Day

We work for ourselves, but you work for us….
The ant collects its own food
The trees grow their own roots
In this world,
There are only a few, who don’t work for themselves,
But help others find their routes.
This is what makes you, our teachers, super-beings,
Who think about us and take care of our every little thing
You sometimes might seem harsh and strict,
But we know you still do it for our best,
And we can’t express it through our childish instincts!
We know you’ve spent nights awake, for us,
We know you’ve worked in the vacations, for us,
And we know you ignore all your problems
So that we have our lessons, without any fuss.
We know the love you have for us,
The same we have for you.
No matter we say this or not, you will always be guiding us, our whole life through
That smile on your face, those beaming, loving eyes, are always a comforting sight
Whatever problems we may face, with you, we are sure, it’ll always be alright!
These words are just a speck in front of your immense love
And, on this Teachers’ Day, we wish, that we keep this bond forever.

Nature’s Revenge

Unthinkable! Unimaginable! Exaggerated!
Write a story that can be aptly called so.
Dharmendra had just returned from his duty. He was tired. Some poachers had entered the forest that day and Dharmendra and his team had to work all day to drive them out of the forest. After having a wholesome meal, Dharmendra lay down in his bed. He thought of reading a book.
A few minutes later, a loud thundering sould was heard in the room. Dharmendra was confused. He ran to the window to find out what had happened. He was surprised at the sight in front of him.
The trees – they were uprooted! ‘An earthquake’, he thought to himself although he did not recall having felt any movement of the earth. He had not expected what happened next. Just as he was about to call his friends to ask if everything was fine, the sound was heard again.
Dharmendra saw that the trees were walking! They moved towards the roads and buildings adjacent to the wild-life sanctuary. They destroyed the roads, demolished the buildings and crushed whatever came their way.

‘This is nature’s revenge, I guess’, Dharmendra said to himself moments before the forest took him down.
