School – The Wonderful Place

By Tanisha Shah, Class VIII B

School is the place I enjoy to go,
From when my learning stage was very slow
I’ve been spending eight hours here each day
Since 12 years ago.
This is the place
Which helped me accomplish my dreams.
It is the place which cleared the troubles,
Which hindered my achieving streams.
I am thankful also
For setting my career base.
I promise to maintain the dignity and grace

Of such a wonderful place.

Android Lollipop-The Sweetest Android Ever

By Ishaan Nyati, Class IX G

Here I tell you the story of Android Lollipop with the signature Material Design tagging along.
It all began when Google decided to bring about the 5.0 update. On October 15, Google released its much anticipated Android L (this has been a tradition of Google to name its new android as a sweet, beginning with the next letter; and the last version was Kit-Kat, and so the next would begin with L) Lollipop, smashing all rumours of Liquorice Candy or Lemon Honey Pie. It later announced that the first devices to come with Lollipop ‘out of the box’ (that is as a base software) were the Nexus 6 (phone), the Nexus 9 (tablet) and the Nexus Player (a television extension; and all three were to be launched on November 3. These were also the first devices to run the sweet operating system.

The Lollipop source code was also made available through the Android Open Source Project in the same week. And both application and operating software began to update to the new standards set by the search engine giant. Most of the apps developed by Google have been updated for material design. All of the Nexus family has got the 5.0.2 update and companies such as Motorola, HTC and LG have also developed Lollipop for their flagships. Samsung, breaking all records, has updated most of its phones in a very short time period.
One of the most important things to note about Android Lollipop is the newly introduced Material Design. It describes this new look in this way: “We challenged ourselves to create a visual language for our users that synthesizes the classic principles of good design with the innovation and possibility of technology and science.” The very new solid squares, rectangles and circles have a floating yet physical and singular touch to them. Also a circular selection interface has been developed that is different from the quite persistent complete selection interface.
Now let us come to the way the operating system will – or already has – revolutionize the way we look at any android device. The most important task of android 5.0 is to bring in uniformity in the versatile tasks and types of work that different apps do. Google launched a long list of icons that must be used to denote tasks in the taskbar (towards the left) as well as in other parts of the app. And Google aspires that this uniformity exists not only in the Android world, but also on iOS, Chrome and the internet.

Now let us come to the less important yet significant changes that characterize the 5.0 update on Android devices. Let us begin with ‘screen pinning.’ As the brother of a 4-year old I have often felt that I could have done with an app which could ‘pin’ the screen on to a single application, and now you can easily do it on your phone without downloading any unreliable third-party apps. Just press the ‘pin button’ on the most recent window and the work’s done. To return, you have to hold the back and recent tabs buttons and the screen is unpinned (you have to put in the code if you have a lock on your lock screen).
The lock screen has also been given a complete makeover. You now swipe up to unlock, and meet the lock below (if any). You can also swipe left to open a camera shortcut, and right to avail a phone shortcut.
We can also view our notifications from the lock screen. Another change is the way the notification tray and quick settings react. The notification tray now doesn’t seem a new window but acts as a stack of cards hovering over the screen when the panel is pulled down. When it is pulled down again, the quick settings panel is visible.
Google has also started a new project- Project Volta. It aims at one of the worst problems encountered by the smartphone industry- the very short battery life. It automatically works in Lollipop phones, acting as an inbuilt battery saver and task killer to save the battery of the device. The new software also brings in a new feature of multiple users. The feature allows the creation of new users, who can set up their own devices in the virtual world, while having the same devices. Guest feature also allows ‘guests’ to use the device without prying into personal information. We can also prioritize our notifications and even select which notifications to show on the lock screen to prevent personal data being shown to any person. The other features like 64-bit processing compatibility, a built in ‘Flappy Android Lollipop’ Easter egg, a new flashlight-like application, 15 new languages and ‘Tap and Go’ are the ones that make Android Lollipop 5.0 the biggest release yet by Android and Google.

Dreams for India

By Juhee Goyal and Tanya Rajani, Class X B and Sanika Fegade, Class XI A

(This poem was presented by students of Kalam House in the Inter-House Poetry Recitation Competition)
Dreaming with eyes open, is not something new,
There are many to this, not only a few.
Dreams are the basis of innovation,
Which is necessary to propel forward a nation.
Many Indians too have had these dreams,
Dreams for our country, big ones indeed.
Gandhiji; he had a dream
The dream of a nation where brotherhood prevails,
A nation where prosperity and peace is entailed.
The dream of an India, which is just to all,
An India which uplifts those who fall.
Many Indians have had these dreams,
Dreams for our country, big ones indeed.
Dr. Ambedkar; he had a dream
The dream of an India, where everyone is free,
Where man doesn’t live by caste or creed,
A nation where everyone is at par,
An India which has a vision sighted far.
Many Indians have had these dreams,
Dreams for our country, big ones indeed.
As Sardar Vallabbhai Patel has been cited,
Dream for an India where we all stand united,
Dream for a nation of victory,
Dream for a safe heaven that is terror free.
Many Indians have had these dreams,
Dreams for our country, big ones indeed.
Kalpana Chawla; she had a dream
A dream to fly, fly up so high,
Beyond the limits of the sky,
Breaking all the gender barriers
She dreamed of achieving more and more,
Not wanting to settle for mere domestic chores.
Many Indians have had these dreams,
Dreams for our country, big ones indeed.
Narayanmurthy; he had a dream
The dream of creating an IT giant,
And so against all the odds, he stood defiant.
He founded the Infosys
Which got India into the business lists.
Many Indians have had these dreams,
Dreams for our country, big ones indeed.
Dr. Kurien; he had a dream
The dream of making India self-sufficient,
In something that it needed to be efficient
He made the nation’s people strong,
And ensured that everyone could hear the milkman’s song.
Many Indians have had these dreams,
Dreams for our country, big ones indeed.
Major Dhyanchand; he had a dream
The dream of getting the nation
Its due recognition
In hockey, oh! That wonderful game
He brought laurels to our country
When he achieved the same.
Many Indians have had these dreams,
Dreams for our country, big ones indeed.
Abdul Kalam; he had a dream
He gave us the formula to succeed,
Aim for Mars, not just the moon,
Aim for the stars, and you’ll get them soon.
Many Indians have had these dreams,
Dreams for our country, big ones indeed.
Let us weave these dreams into an amazing story,
A story of our nation’s strength and glory,
A story that will go on for generations to come,

A story, that inspires all to dream, not just some.

We Dream

By Mrs Abhilasha Umahiya, Educator

(This poem was presented by students of Dhyanchand House in the Inter-House Poetry Recitation Competition)
Being zealous young children,
We aspire, we imagine, we gleam.
With our honest hearts,
We dream, we dream, we dream.
We dream of a land
Of a bright sun and rains and chill,
Where no cloud of smoke and poison
Loiters over the heads to kill.
Where I can live fearlessly,
You can live fearlessly…and so can everyone,
Where no bomb destroys a house,
And massacres old and young.
Where each mother is a Durga,
Each father just and strong,
Where old are loved and cared for,
And are not done any wrong.
Where every man and woman
Stands up for justice,
Where hatred and revenge
Are not at all a practice
Where the world is free of
Rejection, bombs and guns,
Where in the lap of mother Earth,
All do freely, cheerfully run.
Where a girl is not killed
For the sake of hollow honour.
Each eye has respect, acceptance
And pride for her demeanor.
Where no girl, no woman
Is scared to walk alone.
She doesn’t depend on others’ mercy
But soars higher on her own.
Where people don’t suffer and ail
And it’s a paradise,
Oh Lord! Give us strength
To be strong enough to rise.
We sing a song of our vision
That makes our eyes gleam,
Ah, we are not only singing,
But reviewing a fond dream

A Last Day

By Ishita Jain, Class VI D

Nobody had known for a while,
When I was talking to an uneven file.
I was talking, while I walked,
For a minute, I was shocked.

That was all my feeling,
When I was dreaming.
I had nothing to do,
But I saw my uneven file too.

Now, I was in depression,
But I had to do my preparation.
One thing I have never thought,
That thing I have never got.

This uneven file took my head,
When I was going to my bed.
Nothing I have done,
And the first shine came of sun.

                    My Adorable Father

You are the one,
Who gave me life.
With all the fun,
And my lovely mom.

You never said no,
Always encouraged me to go.
In every smile of mine,
You are the reason for the smile.
