Movie Review – Whiplash

Avadhi Dass, Class XIIStudent Editor, 2017-18

This is by far the most encouraging movie I have ever seen. It exudes determination and in a very novel manner, conveys the importance of hard work. It rightly depicts that nothing is unachievable if there is a fire inside you. If you are driven by passion, no road/mountain is insurmountable.
The story revolves around a twenty-something man named Andrew Neiman (Miles Tiller), who enrolls in a music conservatory to fulfil his dream of becoming an ace drummer (one like Buddy Rich). The story depicts his relation with his mentor/instructor Terence Fletcher (JK Simmons) who is extremely disciplined and strict in conduct and makes his studio work really hard and long. He is frank, sometimes abusively so, and leaves no space for mistakes. He is extreme and personifies the ‘All or Nothing’ concept.
Terence is the epitome of perfection in the film whereas Tiller as Andrew shows great purpose and truly absorbs himself in the character.
The Jazz symphonies in the film add to its dynamism. The movie is a must watch for people who like Jazz and live performances and enjoy the thrill of uncertainty.
Holding true to its name, the movie has some gripping twists and sharp turns indeed!
Whiplash holds many surprises, it is compelling yet simplistic and is bound to keep you stuck to your seats. It’s a must watch for anyone passionate about anything, of any age, anywhere around the world.

US Leaks

Debanshi Bansal, Class X D
Mind-boggling; this is what describes this trip. These 10 days made my eyes see a different part of the world, my mind experience the best of things out there and my heart was just on the edge, to come out of my mouth after seeing such beautiful and breathtaking things around me.
Our tour started with Orlando. Here we met our tour chaperon – Mr. Ajit Singh aka Rocky Sir. Here, our hotel though not so good, our spirits were high. Disneyworld was sheer bliss, I never knew such small things could make me so elated. The castle was stunning and the Disney characters were just so very cute. But the best part of Disneyworld was the fireworks, they were so so good that for a moment it felt like time had stopped. It was just electrifying to see the crackers burst. The different colours and patterns made in this was just so alluring that we dropped our cameras just to see them with our own eyes.
The two days of NASA inspired us to become a hero. The space goes as vast as our curiousness and will to explore. At NASA we saw different videos of various missions initiated like the Expedition to Mars or Moon or just building a specific kind of shuttle. These people failed, failed a hundred times yet they got up for the hundredth and one time to see if they would succeed. And they did succeed and the results are in front of our eyes. The interaction with an astronaut, Nicole Stott gave us an insight into how life inside a shuttle is.
The next day we went to Universals and I was like, OH MY GOD. The rides especially ‘the Hulk’ were exhilarating. But the best part was the HARRY POTTER WORLD. Being a Potterhead, it was a dream come true. Sipping butterbeer was like sipping stars, just going around Hogwarts and Hogsmeade left me gaping at the sights. The simulation ride in Hogwarts was so amazing and realistic that I felt I really was going around Hogwarts on a broomstick. One jarring incident was that in Olliavanders I got chosen for wand choosing ceremony. I had to perform spells to find the perfect wand for me and when I got the perfect one wind started blowing around me. I will go blabbering about Harry Potter world but I must move on.
Next we went to Boston. We just had half a day there and we visited Harvard and MIT. In MIT we had a robotics workshop in which we learnt about the functioning of robots. It was a real learning experience. The campus tour of MIT and Harvard gave us an insight into students’ life there. These universities are my dream universities for post-graduation and I hope to be studying there after 7-8 years.
Next we had a bus ride to Niagara which was very tiring, we reached the hotel at 2 in the night but it was worth it. Niagara falls were jaw-droppingly beautiful. As we went towards the falls on a cruise we thought we might freeze due to the cold water hitting our faces and hands. But seriously these falls were so very huge and galvanizing that I wasn’t able to move my eyes away from them.
Next we went to our last destination – New York. The spoiler in New York was the continuous rain. We went to the 100th floor in the One World observatory but we couldn’t see much around due to the clouds and fog. The UN headquarters were not like what I expected. There was nothing to see in there except, through a glass, the General Assembly hall. I was really disappointed by this but hey every trip has its ups and downs.
Further through the day we had a theatre workshop in Broadway. ‘All the world’s a stage’ so we can perform anywhere if we have the skill and will to do it. We had fun performing in groups to remake the Disney movies in our own way. Our group got Cinderella and we had fun doing that. The whole evening was dedicated to Times Square and I might just say it is the busiest and most crowded place I have ever seen. Even Mumbai would have shied away from Times Square. Due to the rain we wandered the whole place under umbrellas but the rain didn’t dampen our spirits.

The last day we went to the Statue of Liberty and it was as mighty as I had heard. A reminder to all Indians who wish to go to USA in the future; carry lots and lots of food with you because the food there is bland like what you get in a hospital. I mean how can someone live on pasta and fries the whole time! I am not going to touch junk food for a couple of months.

Sia’s Dream

Ishika Mundhra, Class X D

It sounds unreal but it was actually happening. Today was the day Sia would never forget in her life. Sia, a hardworking, beautiful, young woman who had been struggling a lot to prove herself was maybe the happiest person on this planet today. Finally, the determined young lady had shown the world and all those stereotypical people that a girl is no less than a boy.
When Sia had turned fourteen, her parents (like all Indian parents) had told her that it was time to start thinking about her future. They told her that she was big enough to begin the ‘career hunt’. Sia started researching and came across many amazing and incredible career options, but nothing appealed to her enough to pursue it. After much thought and study she came across the option ‘legal studies’. It seemed to click in place immediately. The girl then started dreaming about nothing but how she will become a lawyer.
She worked tirelessly day and night, achieved good grades in her board exams, got a good score in her SAT’s and CLAT and even earned a scholarship to the Harvard Law School. She fought all those who tried to demoralize and distract her. Finally, she became a successful corporate lawyer. But her dream hadn’t been fulfilled yet. She worked harder than ever, didn’t sleep at night, forgot to eat during the daytime and strived fanatically, and her efforts didn’t go in vain. Today she finally accomplished her goal and was inaugurating her tenth law-firm. The chain of law firms she owned was ranked the best in the whole of United States. The unbreakable Sia then let the insuppressible tears of joy flow down her eyes.

Book Review: The Da Vinci Code

Dravya Shah, Class VII C

Art By: Dravya Shah, VII C

This novel is a mystery-detective novel by Dan Brown. It follows Symbologist Robert Langdon and cryptologist Sophie Neveu after a murder in the Louvre Museum in Paris, when they become involved in a battle between the Priory of Sion and Opus Dei over the possibility of Jesus Christ having been a companion to Mary Magdalene.

The title of the novel refers, among other things, to the finding of the first murder victim in the Grand Gallery of the Louvre, naked and posed similar to Leonardo da Vinci’s famous drawing, the Vitruvian Man, with a cryptic message written beside his body and a pentacle drawn on his chest in his own blood.
This novel was full of thrill that is yet to be seen by other readers who are keen to seek an adventure full of thrill and action and excitement. You’ll grow into this book and feel yourself as a character living in the experience.
Utilizing your time by reading good books makes you live your life to the fullest!

These were my opinions about this beautiful piece of writing and if you all are into reading books then definitely you have to read this book.

Little Women

Vasudha Gupta, Class X D
“Well, at least it had some effect on your writing skills!” exclaimed Elizabeth. Jane brightened up and both of them thought back to the events of the previous week.
‘Mahika stood outside the Principal’s office gathering courage to go inside and talk to her but she did not know whether the Principal would believe her.” Jane tore that page off her notebook and crumpled it into yet another ball. “Ah! Why can’t I ever write or even start a reasonably amazing story?”
“That’s because you never try to relate it to life such that it instantly bonds with the listeners.” Elizabeth piped in.
This is what had happened a week ago and Jane had snapped, “Please Elizabeth!” and walked out of the room.
Jane had always tried to be verbose but in the process forgot to connect it to the readers or add emotions of any kind.
But soon after, Jane read ‘Little Women’ and understood the importance of caressing the need of simplicity and tried to make her writing more realistic.
Soon, she moved away from loquaciousness, but she also felt happy and contented.
Elizabeth shook her, bringing her back to the present. Jane heaved a big sigh, not knowing whether of relief or grief.

Two Paths

Riddhi Singhania, Class X D

Once diverged two paths
Lying adjacent to each other
Then came a distant traveller
But where to go, he muttered.
Here said the first path
No, here, said the second
The traveller stood thinking there
Where should I go, he reckoned.
The paths began to fight again
Trying to coax the passerby
But the traveller refused to hear and said
Instead, I would like to fly.
So up he went over the paths
Both looked as stunned as ever
And then again a traveller came
But the paths didn’t fight, never.

The Road Which Was Taken

Zubin Turakhia, Class IX E

…And that has made all the difference,
Now as I wander in the woods
Trying to find my way out
There I see Grim Reapers under their hoods
Staring at this uncertain lout.
Alas! I have lost my way
Should I go on or turn back
But my soul said, face the obstacles ahead that lay
With confidence that you don’t lack.
I have entered a grassy stretch of meadows
Across which a diabolic jungle was present
On entry I see growling shadows
Which belong to wolves maleficent.
I prod my steed to race through
That dangerous wood
I again see a rainbow, with sky clear and blue
It is crowded, with no place for me
But it doesn’t hamper my mood.
I have made my place in the far right
As it is, the road taken was a 100% right.
