The Forgotten Map

One day Lia was cleaning up the attic with her mother. She moved a pile of boxes and found a secret compartment. She opened it and found a yellow envelope that had a crumpled piece of paper in it. She thought it was a treasure map but she was not sure. She went to ask her mother but remembered that her father had a lot of old maps. So, she went to ask her father about the treasure map.

Her father said he had seen such blueprints in Lia’s grandfather’s study room. Lia’s dad was curious so he had asked his dad about them, but Lia’s grandfather never told him. When he grew up, Lia’s father was still curious, so he scanned the blueprints and found out that the building had never existed.

Lia researched everything that she could find on the crumpled piece of paper and got to know that the location of the nonexistent building was occupied by the public library. Behind the map there were some faded words, she could make out the words “solve ….. puzzle ……. secret …… treasure”.

Lia thought that she had to solve a puzzle so that she would get to know the secret of the treasure. The next day she went to the library with her dad. There were some places on the map marked ‘C-1, C-2, C-3’. Lia’s dad said that those might be some clues. They went to the place marked C-1 and saw a little statue of some golden painted books, the top book was different from the rest: it had no title, and as the wind blew in from the window the top book opened and inside the book was a bronze key!

They then solved the next two clues and found a silver and a golden key. Now they just had to find where to fit those keys. Just then Lia noticed that on the map at only one place there was a little figure shaped like a key. They went to that place and unlocked the doors quietly, inside the door was another door and yet another one.

When they had unlocked the final door they saw a chest full of gold bars, gold coins, sparkling silver jewellery sets and a big hand painted portrait of a man, a woman and a boy who was not more than 4 years old. The frame of the painting was shimmering and was also made of gold.

Lia and her dad were speechless not because of all the gold and the riches but because the woman in the painting looked just like Lia’s great grandmother. Lia and her father went to talk to the owner of the library and got to know that the owner who was known as Mr. Miller was a very good friend of her great grandmother and he had promised to protect the treasure until one day one of her daughters or sons would find the treasure.

Mr. Miller asked Lia what she would do with all that gold and the painting. Lia had a great plan. Instead of wasting the money in buying things, she would donate some of the money to different charities and give the painting away for display in Mr. Miller’s library. He was very grateful to Lia and told her that she was truly a worthy heir to her grandmother’s treasure.

The Lost Box

Once Nora and her friends were on a picnic at a lake. They placed the picnic mat and Ava, Zuri and Lonnie started putting the food on the mat. Nora and Zuri changed into their swimming costumes and went into the lake for a swim.

While they were swimming, Zuri stumbled upon a box which was submerged in the water. Nora took the box out and saw that it had the sign of a castle which she had seen in a history book before.

When they opened the box they found some sketches, a map and a photograph of a queen, a king and a boy. Lonnie said that they might even become famous for finding this box. Ava did some research and she found out that the sign of the castle on the box was the crest of the king of Udaipur. The king had a wonderful palace right beside the lake. He often used to go to the lake for fishing.

Nora and her friends gave the box to the Udaipur museum. The box was placed in the famous king’s exhibition of the museum. And guess what, they got their names written on a plaque just below the exhibit!

“This was found by Nora, Ava, Lonnie and Zuri, tourists at Fateh Sagar Lake.”

Humans and Humanity

The 7th of June 2047 was an absolutely frenetic day for me. I had no idea that I’d grow up to be the President of the United Nations and that I’d be forced to see such a horrible form of humanity. The world was sweltering because of global warming. It was filled with racist people, riots and crimes. My mother, Earth was suffering because its sons had lost their decency. I was being castigated around the globe for not addressing the needs of the society. I had to do something. Something that could bring an end to this dilemma. I decided to deliver a speech to the entire humankind. Before penning my thoughts down, I decided to write my speech in a prudent manner. But soon, I realized that being prudent could not bring a change. Then, I started writing my speech with a confident mind. I finally wrote a satisfactory but risky speech. Then, I made my way to the headquarters and proceeded to deliver my speech:

Humans Without Humanity

I extend a warm welcome to all of you. We humans, who are smarter than any animal or plant, have disregarded humanity. I am here to mention some fundamental things expected from a civilized man that all of us have forgotten. First, we have forgotten that we have lost pity towards animals, other humans, and our mother, Earth. We have forgotten that greatness becomes an imposter because of selfishness. We have forgotten that we were given a uniform opportunity to expand our civilization by the Earth and we do not respect its message of equality. I know that we humans are gifted with gracious forgetfulness but how could we forget to be perceptive? We know that creation of life is not possible without women and they should get the same respect as any other individual but still, women are being discriminated against. If you take a trip down memory lane then you will notice that mankind has lost its path several times. I conclude my speech by saying that ‘humans can’t be humans without humanity’.

Thank you.

I finished my speech with butterflies in my stomach. Amazingly, my speech did not pick up much controversy and a majority of people deeply considered my speech. The world was filled with tranquility and jubilation again. Racism began to vanish. Beautiful trees and colourful flowers made the Earth happy and cool again. Women were not being discriminated against anymore. My effort to make the world better was successful.
I wish that we learnt from our mistakes and followed everything expected from a kind and civilized human being!

The Cat

Tony : Get up you silly cat !
Ollie : Nope.
( Tony gets startled to find his cat talking and screams )
Tony : Y-y-you c-can talk!
Ollie : Of course I can talk, do I look like a soft-toy to you ? Anyway I won’t go to the park. Now go away and let me sleep.
( Tony faints and comes to the next morning on his bed. )
Tony : That was obviously a dream.
( He finds Ollie enjoying cream like a normal, earthly cat and not a talking, alien, but just to make sure … )
Tony : Ollie ?
Ollie : Meaoww (continues savouring the cream… with a spoon. )

A New Perspective

“What a nuisance this pen has created in front of my favorite teacher! I am going to throw it in the dustbin now.” said Lucy.

Lucy believed that she got scolded in front of her class not because of her but because of her pen and so she wanted to throw her pen away. As she was going to throw it in the dustbin, she felt someone crying and her hands getting wet slowly. But she ignored this and went close to the dustbin to throw her pen into it. That’s when she heard a loud and angry voice, “Leave me, it’s not my fault that you got scolded, Lucy.”

Lucy looked around but didn’t see anyone else. With a shock she realised it was the pen in her hand as it introduced itself.

Lucy told the pen in an angry manner, “I use you everyday. I also think of you as MY BEST FRIEND but because of your laziness my handwriting got spoiled,” Lucy sputtered angrily, “How dare you do that! I don’t want to see you a single minute more!” said Lucy.

“This wasn’t my fault Lucy,” said her pen politely. “It’s actually you who force me to write. Sometimes you and your friends also play with me, you also throw me and my tip gets bent but I’ve never complained and kept bearing the pain.” It really looked crestfallen.

Lucy realised her mistake and said sorry to her pen from the depth of her heart. She had new respect in her voice as  she promised all her materials to keep them safely and of course respectfully.

A Nightmare?

No. no. no…. this cannot be happening..
‘Yes. It is!’- came the reply.
But, I can’t believe it!
‘Oh, yes I knew that, you have written all about yourself in me and I pretty well know about your habit of not believing people, and in today’s case things, easily’, my journal wrote.
Today, it suddenly got feelings and started talking and today as I am writing in it (what should I call it now) it is replying to all the things! Unbelievable!!
To what I wrote, it replied,“Ok Akarsha enough! First of all, I had feelings all along. Secondly, refer to me as ‘she’, not it! And lastly, start believing that it is normal for a journal like me to talk! ‘
I was writing and recording all the things she was saying inside her only.
I wrote, she answered. I couldn’t believe that she had read all my secrets! To this, she said (more like teased) “ohhooo …. I know dear Akarsha’s secrets!!! If you don’t believe in me now, I will babble out all of them to your mum and teachers and friends…’.
Now, I got scared. She said ‘WHY DO YOU FORGET THAT I CAN READ WHATEVER YOU WRITE IN ME!!! ‘
“Okay, I am certainly dreaming… Any second now, I will be waking up to find my journal back to normal and just sitting quietly on my desk”, I wrote.
“No, you won’t… no, you won’t…’ these were the last words that I saw appearing in my journal before drifting off to sleep. Do you think I will wake up inside my vindictive journal?

The Bookworm

Splash!” And the poor little lady cried out, “I’ll HAVE to go tell your parents about your mischief, though they already know it,” and went away muttering, “These children…I’ll have to clean the floor once more now.”

The spoiled brute went slipping through the staircase, two steps a time and “Raaaaaaaaah” he cried. The fat girl who lived in the house next door ran home with wet cheeks and soaked eyelashes. Miles dashed back home and shoved little Minnie right into a chair. His mom couldn’t bear it anymore, but what could she do?

He went straight to the living room where the TV was located and grabbed his video game controls and won every game in a row. Next, he reached for his laptop and clicked on the Xbox button, like, a 100 times or so.

Now he swung his cupboard open and grabbed a handful of Hershey’s chocolates.  He didn’t bother to look at his round tummy.

He clutched the mic system from his father’s room, opened the window and shouted his heart out, which was his new hobby.

But Miss Improve-that-Kid wasn’t gonna let this Miles guy get his filthy hands over any more mischief ideas. A wave of her wand and…

Everything turned really really huge. Miles could see a blue wormy thingy instead of his legs. He saw himself in the dirt covered mirror. In the mirror Miles saw a really green and really tiny worm, with a nose and a pair of eyes, and nothing except these 2 things. Miles pulled his cheek, not his plumpy ones, but just a thin layer of green skin. It wasn’t a nightmare. He spent days just getting really really bored. Nothing to do!

The fairy, Miss improve-that-Kid handed him a book. She felt really bad for him now. He had no hands, so he had to use his wormy tail. He couldn’t understand most of the words, but a dictionary helped him. He started spending days reading books, nights mugging up the dictionary.

This was because he didn’t have hands to shove his sister, legs to knock the poor lady’s soap water bucket, masks to scare the fat girl or voice to burst people’s ears. He now only had eyes to read, and nose to have-his-nose-in-a-book. Miss Improve-that-Kid was really impressed and offered  to change him into a boy again, but he was like, “No, thanks.” She called him the Book Worm.

He married the Reading Bug soon after this and they both lived in their little burrow, reading stories to each other. The reading Bug was another rotten girl who had turned into a reading bug. You’ll never find him in any corner of this world, because he lives in his own world of books, so very happily!

Waiting Wisdom

In the beginning, we were together. It has been a long time since the last one left. Everyone feels the loss of their friends, their loved ones. None more so than I. You see I have been cursed with the intelligence to know the difference.

There used to be six of us. We were created to help mankind but one by one my brothers disappeared.

Justice left when both armies of the holy wars claimed him for themselves.

He was the first to leave.

Humanity left when genocide came to stay for a while.

Transcendence departed when people lost faith in their beliefs, be it god or man.

Temperance left when the world turned into a demanding entitled environment.

Courage faded when people were too scared by the opinions of other people to voice their own.

I’m wisdom and I’m still here. But that’s only because I knew we were destined to fail.

Now, all I do is wait. I believe we will be reunited one day. Life just has to come full circle.

A Life with Meaning

So, once upon a time…there was…a WORM….who just LOVEEEED books. Now, you might just be pondering how this bookworm actually became a BOOK-WORM.

Once, there was a boy named Peter. He used to remain very sad. This was, because he was an orphan. Now, he could play with the other orphan children in the orphanage. But what was more saddening was that he was blind. No one played with him.

The only person he liked was a senior girl in the orphanage. She used to listen to him while he poured his heart out to her. She was also sad for him and tried to encourage him to not lose hope and stay happy. This comforted him. He used to feel that there is someone who cares for him.

One day this girl (whose name was Rachel) brought him a book in which the letters were lifted. He could feel them and she taught him how they were pronounced. He listened carefully and became perfect in them. Now he started reading. The first ones were easier. Then he could read better and better. He became faster. Now he used to feel the letters and read them out to the other children. They also enjoyed it a lot.

Every night, Peter read a story to everyone. Rachel was delighted to see Peter like this. Peter now thought that he had a reason to live. And THAT is how, an orphan, who was blind came to be a Bookworm and fell in love with books.

A Happy Ending

Once upon a time there lived a girl named Alexa who was about 13 years old. She lived in the NYC and her parents gave her whatever she demanded. One day after seeing a senior talking to her friends that she had over a 1000 followers on Instagram, Alexa thought that if she had her own mobile she would have an Insta account too and then she would be famous!

The very same day Alexa asked her father for a phone. Her father knew that he should not give it to her but he couldn’t refuse Alexa and then she got her own phone with a sim and Insta account! Then she decided to post wonderful pictures and have many followers. In the beginning, she had only 28 followers but the number soon increased to 10140 and Alexa was in the seventh heaven!

Once she posted a picture which she loved but her followers detested it and unfollowed her at once and she was left with only 3 followers. She was very depressed. Her father could not bear this. He went up to her and told her that when Graham Bell had invented the phone, it was tied with wires and yet it was really useful. But now that the phones have become wire free, humans are tied to them. It was nice in the start to have a touchscreen phone but soon social media spread and the wire between human and phone turned to an addiction which proved harmful.

Social media praises you but also depresses you. He said, “Alexa, you have got your phone but remember that phone can also be harmful to you. The choice is yours.”

This statement made Alexa think. From then on, she used her mobile phone only for important purposes. She spread awareness about mobile addiction and its harms. In the school she was known not for her Insta followers but for the awareness she created. Her father had opened her eyes. Her father was really proud of her and Alexa was also happy that she was not a mobile addicted person anymore.
