What is Life all About?

Divy Singhal, Class IX E

Life is a rollercoaster ride. It is thrilling, full of experiences and choices. Life gives us chances but if we don’t take advantage of these chances, life moves ahead.
Life is also full of obstacles and because of them, sometimes, we come to a point of risk. But life heals itself, gains wellness and regains health.
Life shows compassion, i.e. sympathy and concern for others. Safety is life’s main concern and kindness, the main motto.
Life loves to love everyone, to forgive others. Life understands the importance of home as it sees many without homes.
Life supports overcoming helplessness that man carries in his heart, the sadness that he feels and the bad times he has.
Life is about sharing everything with people – our joys as well as our sorrows – the achievements and the rewards we’ve received.
Life is a full blend of happiness, sorrow, adventure and risks.
Life cares for its loved ones. We should never consider life as a burden and never think of getting rid of it. No one should sacrifice their life because of failure.
Life is about accepting challenges.

Life is a gift from the almighty and it comes to us only once. So we should enjoy it, learn to preserve it and do everything we can in the only one life we have because once lost, it will never return to us.

How to Eat Fried Beetles

Anshay Saboo, Class VIII A

Let’s just say I’m a bit squeamish. When my little sister spilled her bean and cheese burrito all over herself, I threw up. When I saw a public restroom, I tossed my cookies. When I got the news that I was moving to a new town, called Chan Francis Co (San Francisco, as I now realize), I vomited (I don’t know why, I guess it’s just a reflex action these days.)
I guess it’s time for an introduction. My name is Mathew Oliver Johnson. You can call me Moose. I lived in a quiet little town called Irvine. And city life was NOT for me.
Cows or cars? I’d choose cows. Wood or steel? I’d go with wood. Sizzling home-cooked bacon or a burger? Definitely bacon. But my father was transferred and I had no choice but to move with the family.
I’m writing this on my third day at my new school and I’m already a celebrity. If you want to know why, a clue may be in the title of this story. So, I was sitting in my classroom called 7th Grade Stars (Ugh! Such a cheesy name) with this jock named ‘Big Boy’. He’s the middle-school bully and he’s serving me iced tea. Want to know why? It’s all about the story of how we met ≈≈ (those wavy lines are me having a flashback but you can’t see it, so I’ve written it down here.)
I was biking through the alleys behind my house with my new friend Danny when three huge [and I mean huge {really huge! (you know when you’re nesting brackets, you have to use these things. I picked up in math class)}] boys blocked our path. I tried to look intimidating. But would you be intimidated by a scrawny seventh-grade kid with orangish hair, freckles and braces? (I don’t think so). The biggest of the pack (who just turned out to be ‘Big Boy’) parked his bike and walked over to me.
“Hey guys, check out this fresh meat!” said the Big guy (I’ll call him Big Bug for now.)
The other two (who I will call Tweedledum and Tweedledee), grabbed me and Danny and pushed us against the wall.
“Lokee here! You know this is our territory. This territory belongs to the tornadoes.” (They should have called themselves the tea bugs; they were always getting into hot water.)
“I just moved here,” I said heroically (okay I overdid it.)
Bug Bug’s face lit up. “Wonderful! Then we can give you the normal Friso welcome!
His eyes narrowed on a plank of rotting wood with maggots crawling all over, in and out, on the soft green tufts of fungus (I think the description’s enough)
Tweedledum and Tweedledee snickered as Big Bug grabbed the wood and selected the biggest, fattest maggot of the pack. He thrust it in my face.
“Eat it,” he commanded, laughing.
I gulped. The slimy thing was wriggling around. Just the sight of it made me want to throw up. I leaned forward and opened my mouth to throw up…
*Warning: Do not read the rest of this story if you have eaten anything in the last 24 hours. Actually, don’t read if you wish to eat again.*
… and got a mouthful of beetle.
“Gahh!” I screamed.
The little grub felt like a slime ball in my mouth. I tried to spit it out, but Tweedledum had clasped a hand over my mouth. Trying to keep my intestines where they belong, I chewed and swallowed. It wasn’t actually that bad!
I walked over to the plank and grabbed another and popped it in my mouth.
“Yum!” I said.
Big Bug fell to his knees in front of me. “I will serve you,” he said.
“As you wish,” I said. “Now bring me a smoothie!” (And why not?)
So now I’m sitting with my feet on the table with Big Bug serving me iced tea and Tweedledum and Tweedledee fanning me. I guess city life won’t be so bad after all.

(I guess you’re disappointed you didn’t get to learn how to eat beetles, but I bet you were entertained!)

The Farmers’ Friend

Manas Bhatia, Class VII B

Porter Pig was a very famous pig on farms all across the world. Not only could he lift a barn above his head, but he also had the best snout that anyone had ever seen. Porter Pig was the best at sniffing out trouble. He could smell trouble from fifty miles away. Whenever Porter Pig found trouble, he was always able to fix the problem and make everything okay. Farmers all over the world asked to see Porter Pig, hoping that they would be able to use his strength and snout to make their farm peaceful. One day, on a farm in the south, Porter Pig was sniffing for trouble when he smelled the worst smell he could ever imagine. Porter Pig rushed over to the barn where the smell was very strong. He lifted up the huge barn above his head, and there it was staring right into his eyes. Porter Pig had never seen anything like this before.
The story continued…
There staring straight at him was Pitch, the world’s greatest magician who could even control fear. He was standing in front of Porter Pig in the shadow of the barn. Porter Pig placed the barn beside him and went forward to grab a spade kept in the field.
Pitch laughed and got out of the shadows. Waving his fingers he muttered some words. The spade disappeared from the field and landed in Pitch’s hand.
Porter Pig then put on his boxing gloves which he always carried around with him. The gloves reminded him of his valour and stranght and he decided the he would defeat Pitch by any means. Pitch glided towards Porter Pig and punched him in the face. It stunned Porter Pig but he soon recovered from the shock. A wrestling duel took place between the two and all the farm animals stood staring at them. Both were badly wounded in the fight.
Just then Porter Pig noticed that every time Pitch did some magic, a ring on his index finger glowed. Porter Pig concluded that Pitch’s powers were in the ring. Porter Pig decided to first stun Pitch and then take out his ring.
As the fight continued, soon Porter Pig grounded Pitch and jumped onto his back. Porter Pig then removed the ring from Pitch’s finger. He placed it on the ground and then punched it with his fist. The ring snapped into two and there was a loud cry from Pitch.
Porter Pig saw that Pitch’s body was beginning to turn into purple smoke. The destruction of the ring had caused it.

That was the end of Pitch but not of Porter Pig’s adventures. He once had a duel with Sandman and the Green Goblin. Even today the farmers await the Porter Pig return. They believe that more than the earthworms, it is the Porter Pig who is the farmers’ best friend.

Love Yourself

Iti Kathed, Class X D

Look in the mirror
You’ll see the person
You want to be
That person is you.
To be a bad you
Is better than being a good someone else.
Be perfect
At least for yourself.
Your persona is fantastic
So are your opinions.
Why be better than others
Be better than yourself.

Thank You Dad…

Anvi Mittal, Class IX B

For all the droughty places in the world,
You taught me how to be the rain.
After all the humiliation by the world,
You taught me how to bear the pain.
After all the shoves from the world,
You taught me how to stand upright.
When I was overshadowed by the world,
You taught me how to chase the light.
After all the losses in my life,
You taught me how to play the game.
After each time my head bent towards the ground,
You taught me how to push back the shame.
For all the empty grounds in my life,
You taught me how to create my way.
After all those lazy times I spent,
You taught me how to work night and day.
After all the ways I wounded myself,
You taught me how to hide the tears.
After all those scary nights that passed,
You taught me how to fight my fears.
After all the insults I did to you,
You helped me in whatever possible way.
All your hardwork and sacrifices,
Have made me a better person today.

Mother’s Day

Vagmi Shah, Class X B

As important as any day could be
Is the Mother’s Day, you’ll see.
A day to cherish the one person who
Would go to any length to
Protect her child from danger.
A mother can’t be described in words
Nor in a sentence, nor in any essay.
These feelings are genuine, right from the start
And come straight from the heart.
Being a mother
Is just another
Part of a woman’s life
But it is truly the best part in her life.
            I think that the celebration
Of Mother’s Day should not be just a consideration.
But must be celebrated in way
            That she would remember it
            Till her last day.
Colourful balloons and beautifully
Wrapped gifts and sugary sweets
Are just some of the treats
That one offers to their mother.
            But on this special occasion
Do the best thing you could ever have done.
            And instead of these treats
            Give her your feelings instead.
Feelings and thoughts will be more
Easy to cherish and store.
She would always remember the day
The day in the month of May
When her children expressed themselves
In the best possible way.
Tell her, on this special day
How much you love her, everyday!

Forgiveness – the Best Quality

Vaidehi Partani, Class IX A

A human being is a great personality
And forgiveness his best quality.
Life is like a shining star,
It is like a speeding car.
Your hands should be open only for sharing,
Your time should be spent a little for caring.
Cats and dogs raining from the sky,
Your friend for you should be that high.
Love is not at all more than wealth,
Your first priority should be health.
Never be a person who is helpless
Ever be a person full of kindness.
Harsh words are like huge stones
They are like default cell phones.
The way injury takes time for healing,
Same way people take time for understanding.
A person feels safe at home,
Like a cushion filled with foam.
You feel comfort and are happy with support,
Like you are standing inside a strong fort.
You should be sweet like honey,
A cute toy like a bunny.
To err is human
To forgive is divine.
A human being is a great personality
And forgiveness is his best quality.

A Story of Twists

Hridhima Tyagi, Class VIII B

“It’s lunch time!” shouted Harry, “Sarah, show us your tricks.”
Sarah, a tall girl, was famous for her magic tricks. She stood in the center of the children. “Here are two of my pet bugs. Now I will remove the cloth and presto! The bugs are gone.” She pushed the cloth towards Harry. The bugs lay crawling there. As Harry bent for a closer look, the bugs suddenly jumped onto Harry’s nose. Harry fainted.
“Babloo fistzi non.”
“Huh?” Harry sat up confused, “What did you say?”
“Babloo fistzi non.”
“I am sorry but I don’t understand”, Harry said looking bewildered as he watched the alien speak. The latter looked like a man but was wearing a skirt.
“He is asking you to get up,” answered a tall thin girl dressed in a milky white shirt and black pants. Her shoes looked like they were made of polished chocolate.
“Here, have this,” she pushed forward a plate of crisps.
Harry jumped upon them but he soon realized that the crisps were made of steel. He threw them away. That is when he realized that all of them were robots.
“You are under our control now,” said the girl.
The robot pushed Harry into a small cell while he kept shouting, “Sarah, mother, father!”
“Can they hear you?” asked the girl.
Harry shook his head.
“So shut up.”
Suddenly, another girl appeared at the door. She opened it and motioned Harry to come fast.
“Shouldn’t I be the prince saving a princess!” he thought as he was rescued by the girl.
“It’s a world of twists! Let’s go through the water fall,” said the girl.
Harry looked in amazement as the water fall was ‘falling’ upwards.
Suddenly, a policeman came on a cycle and on the other side he saw a milkman in a police car.
“This world is really confusing,” he said to himself.
He was soon in the middle of the waterfall. But he was not quick enough and was flung up and up and up.
Harry woke and saw himself surrounded by Sarah and other children.
“Babloo fistzi non.”
Harry watched in amazement as his tongue spoke an alien language. The world of twists was really on his mind now. He tried the rest of the day to speak in his own language. It was really tiring.

This is what a magic bug can do to you. So stay away from them!

Surfboards, Shadows and Sheep

Porter Pig was a very famous pig on farms all across the world. Not only could he lift a barn above his head, but he also had the best snout that anyone had ever seen. Porter Pig was the best at sniffing out trouble. He could smell trouble from fifty miles away. Whenever Porter Pig found trouble, he was always able to fix the problem and make everything okay. He lifted up the huge barn above his head, and there it was staring right into his eyes. Porter Pig had never seen anything like this before.
The story continued…
Its eyes were green with black inked in the centre. It tilted its head. It had challenged Porter Pig and Porter Pig never turned down a challenge.
This was no ordinary animal. It was the white streaked skunk. If Porter Pig could lift a barn, the skunk could melt it with its smell. As far as Porter Pig knew (though he wasn’t very smart) the only way to get rid of skunks is tomatoes or tomato soup. Or honeybadgers. Then again, it’s hard to find a honeybadger in Thailand.
Porter Pig had to get rid of the skunk. But how? He tried to think. “Hmm… His horrid stench has scared away most of the animals. How about we scare him back?”
At this, his piggy little brain got a big idea. Porter Pig’s big idea needed other farm animals.
Porter Pig was strong, the chicken were loud, the horses were fast and the sheep were well… uh….. sheep.
So, he gathered them around and told them his plan of surfboards, shadows and sheep. The next day, they got ready for the big plan (except for the sheep).
The chicken made a wall against the barn and started screaming. From inside, the shadow of a howling wolf scared the skunk. Then behind him came a group of horses riding on surfboards which were floating on tomatoes (which were conveniently available) and it completely scared the skunk and it ran away.
All the farmers cheered. It cost them a lot of money but it worked. The sheep did not care. After a washing, the barn would be clean. But I still feel they could have called a honeybadger and got their work done for free. But some people just don’t like honeybadgers (like sheep) Baah!

Moral of the story: Skunks are bad and smelly and hate tomatoes. And, teamwork is always good!

Are you ready to be the change?

Anushka Mimani, Class X B

The current Indore has a variety of problems ranging from power shortage to overcrowding. The crime-rate and accidents have shot up immensely. Rapes and female infanticides cover the headlines of newspapers frequently. Diseases are spreading because of unhealthy living conditions.
The root cause of most of these issues is the citizens of Indore and their unhealthy mindset.  Every street in Indore is littered with garbage. The harmful fumes coming out from industries and vehicles pollute the environment and breaking the traffic rules has led to accidents.

It is said, “Once your mindset changes, everything on the outside will change with it.” Blaming the government won’t solve anything.  People need to stop worrying about just themselves and start looking at the bigger picture.
Small things like cycling to school and preventing wastage of electricity can make a huge difference. Strict enforcement of laws is important to reduce crimes and accidents. The citizens of this city need to understand the value of each person regardless of whether he is a sweeper or a CEO. Students should be taught the importance of developing an eco-friendly attitude because they are the future of this city and a few years from now, they will decide what becomes of it.

The city is already in an alarming state and it is high time the citizens stop hitting the snooze button for every problem.
