The Lizard and the Bird

Shruti Laddha, Class VI D

Once upon a time, there lived a charming king named Alex and his beautiful queen, Anna. One day, they were in the palace garden enjoying the sight of the lovely flowers when suddenly, a big black cloud appeared in the sky.
It was the wicked witch on her flying broom! Last year the witch had tried to kill Queen Anna but the king had bravely fought her and broken her wand. The witch spoke to the couple in a thundering voice, “Anna, last time you were saved, but this time, I will have my revenge on both of you.” She chanted some magic spell and turned Alex into a lizard and Anna into a bird. The witch then entered the palace with a wicked laugh and ordered the soldiers to hunt the lizard and the bird.
King Alex and Queen Anna sneaked into the palace and went to their magic room. They were very sad. After all, who’d want to be a lizard or a bird? Suddenly, a voice came from the mirror, “Go to the dark caves and pick the sword inside. It will remove the witch’s spell and then you can kill her with it. But do it before midnight or else, everything will be lost!”
King Alex sat on Queen Anna’s back and she flew them to the dark caves. They found the sword. As soon as they touched it, they returned to their original forms. They were happy.
King Alex picked the sword and ran towards their kingdom. He bravely entered the palace and challenged the witch. The witch was scared, she tried to escape but Queen Anna had locked all the doors.
King Alex fought the witch and slayed her with his sword and the whole kingdom was happy again. The flowers were blooming, the birds were chirping and the people rejoicing. They all lived happily ever after.

Black and White

Anushka Mimani, Class X B

Look around, take a look around our world,
They say it is filled with colour, everywhere,
Happiness, laughter… life is perfect.
But you don’t see
Dishonesty, suffering, the fake smiles they wear.
Now look again, but this time with an X-ray beam for an eye,
A black and white picture will be seen.
No deception, only reality, rid of illusion, rid of lies.
This is the way the world has always been.
Corrupted with human follies and sins,
Gradually moving away from the ‘ideal’ place,
In the near future, the world will drown,
It will perish, leaving no trace.
Of the cruel human, with unfaithful traits,
And a new world will be born, one with actual colour
With its inhabitants having a heart, alive, not sitting idle,

It will be forever bright, not becoming any duller.

Thank You Dear Teachers

Anjali Jhawar- Class XII A

NAMASTEEEE MA’AM….
Isn’t this the way all of you are greeted every single day no matter which class you enter?!
I am sure…
Well, TEACHER. A word of simply 7 letters but with a meaning so profound that it took us almost 14 years to understand its true meaning. For most of us, our first memories of our encounter with a place called a ‘school’, would have involved crying, throwing tantrums and convincing our moms never to send us to that place again!
But how did that place suddenly turn out to be our second home?
Well definitely, without any trace of doubt, it was the warmth and the friendly environment that all the teachers provided which made us forget the anxiety of parting with our parents for the first time.
Elementary school was fun but then we stepped into …MIDDLE SCHOOL!
As middle schoolers, our newfound title as teenagers was something we didn’t fully understand, but believe me, we didn’t really have to worry because we had our teachers to keep us on track. Be it tracking our way through the jungle where the best claim themselves to be the king or tackling peer pressure, our teachers were always by our side. We pestered them with our demands for free periods, pleaded to take us to the field and followed them like a lamb for even a 0.5 mark increase, but never did we see our teachers lose that wide smile on their faces.
As years passed by, it was finally time for the big transition. HIGH SCHOOL!
Now that was a change which threw our confidence to rock bottom. Each word being taught seemed unfamiliar and every subject had an unknown depth of its own. But here again we had our teachers by our side to guide, motivate and influence us.
We always hear our teachers say “Your smile is our reward” which tells us how much we mean to them and how much they love us.

Thank you dear Teachers, we will never be able to express the immense love we have for you in our hearts.

Educator

He For She

Anushka Mimani, Class X B

People say it’s a dark, dark world,
People say, don’t leave the girl,
Alone at night.
But boys… they’re alright.
People say, “Girls, it’s not safe.”
“Get home before it’s too late.”
“But boys, you’re okay,
You can stay up late today.”
But why can’t a girl stay out to party?
Why can’t she walk alone in an alley?
Why’s this place not safe for girls anymore?
Why is there so much discrimination?
Why for a girl no job no education?
Is this your definition,
Of a girl in a democratic nation?
This problem won’t just fly away,
It’s imperative to find a way,
We’ll have to do so much more,
To wipe this evil from its core.
A girl is also a human being,
So stop just sitting and seeing.
Teach the man not to neglect a girl.
Give her love, give her respect,

Let her be heard.

One Day

Twisha Patel, Class IX F

Neither father, nor mother was there to console us. I was worried and a number of thoughts and questions were piling up into a huge heap in my mind. The past was like a scorching beam searing me.
I remember the date well. It was March 29, 2012. It was late in the evening. I had called my friend Eureka several times on her phone to wish her on her birthday. When I failed to get any response from her, I sent her a text message hoping she’d reply. But she didn’t. I went to sleep thinking that she might be with her family members.
A nagging thought didn’t let me sleep. Eureka never acted like this. She should have seen my message by now. She could at least have sent a reply to me. I finally decided to go to her apartment. When I reached there, I went upstairs and rang the bell.
When even after a while there was no response, I concluded that she wasn’t at home. I left feeling dejected.
As I was walking back home, I saw Eureka outside a hospital. I rushed to her. When she saw me, she burst into tears. I consoled her and asked her what she was doing at the hospital. She spoke with difficulty. I stood there transfixed as if the world around me had come crashing down.
Our brothers had been on their way to plan a small get-together for Eureka and they had met with an accident. Our parents were in the ICU. We, being too young, were not allowed inside. I prayed to god that may all this be just a dream and that I may wake up to realize that none of this had actually happened.

Well, that’s exactly what happened. My phone buzzed and I woke up with a start. I was dreaming! It was Eureka’s call.
